During the month of April we want to take time to share our appreciation for some unsung heroes of the Civitan Services Family – our Occupational Therapists!
What is Occupational Therapy you may ask? Well, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association, “Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability.
Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. Occupational therapy services typically include:
- an individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals,
- customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals, and
- an outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan.
Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team. It is an evidence-based practice deeply rooted in science.”
While this is a fantastic look at the OT Job Description, we wanted to give you a birds eye view of what Occupational Therapy looks like at the Civitan Services Preschool!
The students above are working hard on their Lion Craft…but oh, so much more! This particular activity works on sensory play, hand strengthening, scissor skills, marker tripod grasp, bilateral hand coordination skills, following multi step directions and body awareness skills while participating in something the kids really enjoy!
Jerrek, Emmett, and Olivia love playing with their lacing beads! This activity works on pincer grasp, bilateral hand coordination skills, identifying colors, matching colors, crossing midline and manual dexterity. Learning and playing at its finest!
Who knew math could be so fun, well Grayson and Logan are learning just that as they play the Ice Cream Math game! This activity works on hand strengthening, identifying numbers, counting objects, crossing midline and sequencing skills; and these kiddos are acing it!
In Occupational Therapy, we are all about improving skills to promote independence! Whether it’s improving a child’s ability to brush their teeth, tie their shoes on the playground at school, sit at a table and complete their homework, or any number of other examples. We work on improving self care, sensory processing, fine and visual motor skills, strength, social interaction and so many more things to help children become their best self in all aspects of their life.
At Civitan Services we love and appreciate our Occupational Therapists and are excited to celebrate April as Occupational Therapy Month! Thank you for all you do to forward the Civitan Services Mission: “to provide quality individualized training and support for children and adults with developmental disabilities in order to help them maximize their potential”.
